5. Scientific activity

H. Oliveira has worked in research on Plant Pathology for the past 25 years. After completing the PhD on Fusarium diseases of tomato plants (specialisation on soilborne plant pathogens) the research activities were mainly redirected towards decline of young grapevines and wood grapevine diseases, meeting an increasing demand from community for expertise on this subject. Research was focused on diagnosis and control of crown-gall, black-foot and Petri diseases in nurseries and vineyards. The experience and knowledge acquired has opened new prospects for research on taxonomy of Ilyonectria/”Cylindrocarpon” spp. infecting grapevines, genetic diversity of species, and development of rapid and sensitive methods for early detection of pathogens, disease epidemiology and control. A deep collaboration on the Project PRAXIS/11201, the supervision of two PhD thesis on the subject, and two related post-doc projects supervision contributed for the increasing interest on Colletotrichum fungi, mainly in Mediterranean fruit crops.

Present research interests are being carried out on the following subjects: diversity of plant pathogens, host-pathogen interactions, epidemiology and disease control, with emphasis on grapevine wood fungi.

Member of the Research Centre of Biosystems Engineering-CEER (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia). Principal Investigator of Research Group II - Integrated Sustainable Horticultural Systems - Last evaluation - Very Good.
